We will start the year with our “Encounters with Yukiko” and this time we have prepared a workshop that will consist of three sessions (a monthly meeting) dedicated to “ leather hardness”, a topic so many times mentioned and so many others difficult to define and recognize. That is why we will work three different techniques that will help us to know what is the hardness of leather necessary to be able to work the mud in each situation, depending on the type of mud we use and the technique to be performed.
Teacher: Yukiko Murata
Dates: Saturdays January 18, February 15 and March 14, 2020.
Hours: from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Workshop 1 program; MENTORI
Mentori is the decorative technique that creates various flat faces around an already formed piece. “Men” means the face and “tori” (toru) means to take out, so this technique works to perform facet carving.
To understand the “leather hardness” in the first place this exercise is very appropriate because it has to control the humidity, the thickness, types of tools and especially how to control the drying process.
Workshop Program 2; SHINOGUI
Shinogui is the decorative technique that is expressed by the lines that it creates when emptying the surface of the already formed piece, it can be the exterior or / and the interior, with the tools “emptying” or “polishers”. With this exercise you can also learn how to control the moisture state of the mud and the use of tools.
Workshop Program 3; Ribbed
Decorated ribbed, creates some steps or parallel channels that cover a part or the entire surface of the piece, lowering the mud to leave the drawing in relief keeping the same thickness throughout the piece. This technique also requires an appropriate humidity point to work.
The three exercises are very effective in learning to recognize the “leather hardness”, which will vary depending on the technique and the type of ceramic paste we use.
The course is aimed at those people who are interested in design and want to learn ceramic techniques and language. Mastery of the basic artisan techniques of these materials is not necessary.
The student will be able to acquire the conceptual knowledge necessary to develop individual creative aspects with the historical knowledge of the techniques.
